If you’re struggling between installing porcelain or ceramic flooring in your house, you need to know the differences between the two. There are some similarities, including the material from which they’re made and how they look. However, they have their own unique characteristics that make them separate types of flooring. Find out the differences between porcelain and ceramic flooring before you make your purchase.
What is Porcelain Tile?
Porcelain tile is made from dense clay. This clay is heated to high temperatures to give it more durability than ceramic flooring. Porcelain tile is known to have a strong resistance to water.
This type of flooring mixes clay with water and is often made out of quartz, feldspar, and kaolin. Once any excess water is removed, the porcelain tiles get formed into shape and are then set out to dry. Once the drying process is complete, designs and patterns for the tile get added by using an inkjet printer. Some tiles get glazed at this time, but you can get unglazed porcelain tiles as well. If the tiles are glazed, it helps to protect them from getting worn or torn.
People who install porcelain flooring have a few reasons for doing so. It is resistant to water and is incredibly dense. Also, because it’s so hard, porcelain tile doesn’t crack easily. On top of that, it is easy to maintain, making it more convenient.
What is Ceramic Flooring?
Ceramic flooring is mainly made out of clay and water. It has two layers: the bisque, which is the thickest visible layer, and the glaze, which is the top-most layer where you see all of the color. However, you can get ceramic flooring without the glaze.
This flooring is made in a similar way to porcelain tile. The clay has a little kaolin in it and is made out of low-density materials. The tiles get formed into shape after any excess moisture is removed, just like with porcelain tiles. It even goes through a similar design process, with an inkjet printer adding colors and patterns to the tiles.
Ceramic flooring has a list of appeals. It isn’t as expensive as porcelain tile and has a wide selection of options from which to choose. It also has the same water resistance and low-maintenance aspects of porcelain tile.
